Apparitions is a light and color study that quickly became a deeper and more involved investigation of symmetry. It began by photographing an asymmetrical sculpture that was built and modified in front of the camera. There came an impulse to tame or bring order to the images of the sculptures. When applying symmetry and balance, the sculptures transform into textures that evoke an otherworldly familiarity. The mind seeks patterns, and the emergence of familiar silhouettes in these objects began to read like portraits. The phenomenon of pareidolia is deeply ingrained in the human experience, especially the visual experience. How do symmetry and patterns influence our response to the world, and what effect does this have on the world we inhabit?
